Recently I found I had a few websites I had basically abandoned, mostly because the products had become less attractive and were no longer worth the effort of promoting. I decided rather than let the sites simply sit there costing me hosting money - I should try to optimize the sites for Google AdSense and see if I could make any income from the sites at all.

I must admit that I probably had a slight advantage as my sites still had "some" traffic. I had heard about people earning good money through the Google AdSense program so I decided I had nothing to loose by experimenting to find out if I could in fact earn any money from my useless sites or not.

Almost as soon as I put some effort into optimizing my sites I noticed an increase in click through rates in my Google AdSense account. The increase in my earnings wasn't enough to get too excited about. I had increased my earning to about $3.00 a day, hardly enough to retire on but at least I could see that the alterations I had made to my sites had increased my AdSense income.

The next thing I do is SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to see if I can improve the traffic to my AdSense websites, my theory being if I have x amount of traffic to my sites now- then if I can double the traffic then I should double my income. The only tool I used to start with was Ad Word Analyzer

I try to think of prospective niche markets - a quick search using Ad Word Analyzer tells me which of my niche keywords are searched for the most - also the keywords where I'll have the least competition. Now that I have the keyphrases I'm going to use for my new website, then I try to register a domain name using those keywords, if I can't do that then the very least I do is put the keywords I want to target in my webpage title tags.

Then I write articles around my keywords, I try to think of what keyphrases the searcher would type in - then I use that term as my article title eg: "Google AdSense Tutorial" I always make sure I have a text link using the anchor text I want to rank for. Finally I submit my articles to the top 10 article directories.

I find these methods have worked for me - it just takes a little time and effort thats all.

I believe that slow and steady wins the race--and, you'll get to keep your Adsense account for the long run. Let me give you some perspective. Google is worth $120 billion. Google stock is now valued at over $400 per share. A good portion of their profit comes from pay-per-click advertising (Adwords). Yet, online advertising is still a relatively small percentage of total (U.S.) advertising dollars spent. However, things are rapidly changing. Online advertising will see steady growth for many years to come.

The potential windfall for online web publishers is enormous. A web publisher making $30 a month today, could be making $300-$500 per day in a few short years. Those who go for the quick, unethical profits now, but lose their Adsense accounts because of it, may be kicking themselves in the future. To me, it's just not worth it.

Anyway, for those of you who think that you'll never make it to that coveted $100 per month mark so that you can join the Google monthly check club, take heart. It's too easy to hit the "back" button or close the browser.

Your job as an online web publisher is to give people quality information. The ads are an added benefit to your visitors. If they want more information on a product or service related to your subject matter, then they are more likely to click on an ad. They will trust your site more. And, yes, my sites consistently have really good CTR. That means "high interest."

=> BUILD MORE THAN ONE WEBSITE

While a few lucky web publishers have hit the golden jackpot ($10,000 a month and up) with only one site, most of them had built up a very popular site over several years and already had tons of steady traffic (in the thousands). You and I, down here in the trenches with fairly new sites, cannot realistically expect to achieve these lofty heights overnight. It's gonna take a lot of work to get where they are, if we ever do. Now the truth is, the more quality websites you build, the more money you'll make with Adsense. This goes for blogs too. If one site drops in clicks, then another site often picks up the slack. The more sites you build, the more opportunities you'll have to reap Adsense profits. How many sites you build is up to you, but it's not uncommon for successful web publishers to have between two and 10 sites, some have many more!

Yes, this takes a lot of work. You have to research a niche topic, keywords, popularity potential, design a decent looking site, write or hire someone to write quality content, get your site listed in the search engines, keep monitoring your site, etc. So, you'll be working some long hours in front of your computer. But think of it as building your online empire--one site at a time.

I=> USE HIGHEST PERFORMING AD BLOCK

While you can test various Adsense ad block sizes and colors on your website, others have already done the research as to the top performing ad block. It's the 300x250 rectangle. This block should be blended into your web page so that it doesn't look so conspicuously like an ad. People hate ads. They don't like to be sold to. However, if your ad blocks don't scream "advertisement" to them, they're more likely to click. This has been proven.

The best positioning for ad blocks is at the top of the page (center position seems to get more clicks). Also, blue link color gets more clicks than any other link colors. But of course, you're free to experiment with ad blocks on your own site.

=> TWEAK AND UPDATE YOUR WEBSITES

No website is perfect. You can always make improvements. Change or add new (relevant) information. If your website is ranking low, try adding new information. Search engines love websites that have fresh information. You don't have to add something new every week, but you can tweak and update your sites periodically. I've had sites move into excellent search engine positions just by doing a little tweaking.

BEWARE of auto-generated feeds and content. Google is cracking down on sites that have too much automation. The search engines seem to love organic content that looks and reads like the web publisher put some personal effort into it.

The Five Different Levels of the AdSense Publisher Spectrum

The Google Adsense program pays out hundreds of millions of dollars to its publishers every single month, and there is a very wide and differing variety of all the webmasters and bloggers that currently make use of this contextual advertising system. Each of the publishers follows different rules and methods when it comes to using Adsense, and the members of each group all earn a different amount of money.

I have been a participant in the Adsense program for a few years now, and a significant chunk of my monthly income comes from this program. I have talked with dozens of different webmasters and publishers and seen thousands of different Adsense sites, and from my own experience I have found that there are really five different levels that Adsense publishers fall on. I will describe each of these levels, and if you yourself are an Adsense publisher then it may be fun to find out where you fall on the spectrum.

First Level of the Adsense Spectrum: Monetizers

The first group is what I call the 'monetizers.' These are the guys that really do not know too much about web design or search engine optimization, they would never imagine worrying about keywords or ad relevancy, and for them just finding that they can copy this super-fabulous amazingly cool javascript code to their website that will actually *earn them money* (!) is just the neatest gosh darn thing they have ever seen. There are a great deal of publishers that fall into this category, and rarely do they ever earn over $150 per month. These are usually the non-profit websites or the mom-and-pop type sites, and they will usually use their Adsense revenue to pay for their hosting costs.

Not to over-generalize, but older people that have trouble using Windows make up alot of this category. I find that some of these types of people remind me alot of my mother: very kindhearted with good intentions but they type at 10 WPM and they do not have a clue about computers. And they are happier than a kid on Christmas when they log into their Adsense account and see a whopping $0.23 for their daily earnings.

Second Level of the Adsense Spectrum: Wannabes

The second group is the 'adsense wannabes.' I actually feel a bit sorry for this group because they usually end of failing miserably at being an Adsense publisher (that is if they can ever get accepted into the program!) and they accomplish nothing except lowering their already low self-esteem. I can deeply empathize with this group of folks because this is actually where I started out. They approach the Adsense program with a type of 'get rich quick' mentality, sometimes due to the exaggerations of an ebook writer and sometimes because once they begin to learn about the Adsense program their brain has trouble accepting the fact that this is an actual business.

I mean come on, a business is where you work 60 hours per week to make somebody else rich, right? There is no way that you could build up a high 4-figure monthly income from this crazy Adsense thing, is there? Well I hope you know better, and this is the level of thought that these people are stuck at. These are the opportunity seekers, the people that will sign up for a new network marketing 'business opportunity' once per quarter and then whore themselves out to their family and friends because they have failed at everything else and are always jumping back and forth so that they never succeed at anything.

But I do not want to be overly critical, because like I said this is the level at which I started out. These are the people who have been convinced that this is the next big thing and that once they set up a single website they will make enough money to retire. Most of these types will fail to generate any real income and will move on to the next 'big thing.' But those who do start off at this level and stay at it long enough will move up to the third level.

Third Level of the Adsense Spectrum: Noobs

Statistically speaking, if you are reading this then there is a chance that you are an Adsense Noob (short for newbie). It is by far the largest category of Adsense publishers. This is not something to feel bad about, and in fact I consider it to be something to be proud of because you have demonstrated your devotion to learning this new business and actually making a decent residual income with it. If you were not devoted then you would still be at the penniless level of the wannabe, so take heed noob for you are on the path to success.

I define an Adsense Noob as someone who makes less then $300 dollars per month. They are probably pretty intelligent people and are very web-savvy, and they probably read tons of material and ebooks related to Adsense and internet marketing, but they simply cannot seem to get past this invisible threshold that is keeping them from higher profits.

I was stuck at this level for longer then I care to remember, and if you are at this level then please allow me to offer some humble advice that may allow you to advance to either level 4 or 5 depending on your personal preference. If you are really trying hard to make your Adsense earnings high enough to live off of and make a big change in your life (maybe quitting your job) and you are frustrated because you simply cannot figure out what you can possibly do to earn more money, then please for the love of all things good and sacred in this world pick a single website and stick with it!! This was my biggest mistake that kept me at the level of a noob for far too long, because I would pick a new topic and make a new website, and then a few weeks later I would do the same thing to the point that it felt like I was running in place.

If you are like me, sticking with a single website or blog as opposed to trying to build up many different ones simultaneously will be a real turning point for you. Think of it like this: when you go out of your way to focus all your attention like a laser on one single project, you will be building this one website up to a 5 instead of building 5 websites up to a 1. Not only that, but you are literally building up an asset because if your website was making you $2,000 per month on a fairly reliable basis, there is a good chance that you could sell it for 8-14 months of revenue.

Another factor that goes into graduating from the noob level is having all of the information you have been reading about Adsense, traffic generation and internet marketing to sink in on a subconscious level. This can take a while, because you need to read or hear something at least seven times before it will really sink in. But once you keep reading and absorbing information for a long time then it will eventually become habit and you will find that you are able to build highly optimized pages intuitively, and it is at this point that you should be able to move on to level 4 or 5 if you wish.

Fourth Level of the Adsense Spectrum: Empire Builders

Empire builders are the people that approach being an Adsense publisher from the perspective of building a business. They do not mess around, and they spend a decent portion of their mental energy focusing on the cold, hard numbers. The empire builder has many websites, and he/she focuses on things such as finding profitable keywords, improving CTR, discovering which websites topics tend to be the most profitable, testing page configurations and traffic generation methods, and so on. If this does not sound like fun to you, it certainly isn't, and that is what separates the empire builder from the noob.

But just because focusing on improving CTR and split testing page layouts is not exactly fun does not mean that it is hard, and the potential payoff can seriously be worth the inconvenience of taking the time to do it right. There is an important paradigm shift that needs to take place in your awareness if you want to be a successful empire builder: you must realize that your profession is literally to connect advertisers with people who are interested in what they are promoting.

By creating content sites around a certain topic, you are drawing in people who are interested in that topic, and then you are 'giving' those visitors away to other websites that may not be as good at marketing as you are. The main thing to be aware of here is that even though you are building up a base of website visitors with the intention of having them leave your website by clicking on relevant ads, they will be leaving some money in your virtual tip jar as they go! If you are an empire builder, it is important that you do not get too attached to your websites and spend most of your attention focusing on how you can connect your visitors with relevant advertisers.

Fifth Level of the Adsense Spectrum: Adsense Whores

By my choice of words you may think this is a bad thing, but it's not and it can potentially be extremely profitable to be an Adsense whore. The business model of the Adsense whore is to have one single website and have ads appearing on potentially millions of pages on the site. The key distinction here is that most of the time the single website that this person focuses on will be a community site or a networking site, and there will be thousands of members that effectively create unique content each and every day. And with all of the unique pages that your member base is creating, you can place your code on nearly every singe one of them.

A forum or a social networking website are great examples of websites that can make a killing using this type of business model. Many sites that are powered by user-generated content will employ an ad rotating script so that their adsense ads are rotated continually with other types of visual ads, so that the visitors do not become 'banner blind' and ignore the ads completely.

When you have a popular website and a member base numbering in the thousands or the tens of thousands, a 6-figure monthly income is not out of the question when you are able to monetize the vast number of pages that are being perpetually created. This level is out of reach for most people because it usually requires an extensive knowledge of web application programming and you will usually have to hire skilled programmers to work on the back end of the site and make sure that it is secure. This can be costly, and there is a chance that you will also need to hire people to moderate the content that users are creating. It is a full-on business, and it pays accordingly.

A company buys expired domains with existing links, search engine listings, and a loyal following of Internet surfers that some webmaster just gave up on or couldn't afford to run anymore.

You have been dying to get more sales from your website and you see a company has purchased thousands of expired domains with actual traffic still pouring in to them, or at least that is what they say. I am not going to say their necessarily lying, but I will say it is important to read this before you continue on with a decision of purchasing this traffic.

The catch line usually is that the domains registered with this traffic seller are all sectioned into industry categories of relevance that you can rent, making it highly targeted traffic to boot. So your getting into your wallet ready to spend a hundred dollars or less for thousands of eager online shoppers for your product. You see your site fits a category that you know you can entice visitors to buy from or at least get some AdSense clicks from ... STOP!

Right off the bat I will tell you, if you value your AdSense account at all, this method of promotion can destroy your reputation with Google AdSense. This is due to the fact that traffic is generated by other users trying to generate traffic to their sites as well. Most sites are ignored in an attempt to rack up points for views to their site.

Another method is having your site pop-under or pop-up when visiting a specified URL. While this method of traffic generation can work for some sites with good landing pages, not all redirected domain traffic companies play by the rules and to cloak a pop-up or pop-under from a user they can modify the opening browser window to be the size of a mere dot that a user would never be aware of. This of course would count as a visit to your site.

This has been discovered on more than one occasion as I myself tried to capitalize on additional low cost advertising methods and while being ineffective they can be harmful especially to an AdSense account.

If you read Google's TOS you will specifically see traffic exchanges and pop-under/pop-up forbidden for any landing page with Google AdSense code on it. You break these rules you may face a warning, but at times many have faced the penalty of termination. Knowing the risks involved with this type of advertising you are best to keep your site and your AdSense account as far away from these companies as possible.

If the sound of redirected domain traffic does appeal to you, the only way to guarantee yourself the traffic is legitimate is to order expired domains yourself. There are membership based sites dedicated solely to finding these types of domains in your niche and you just pay for the domain and forwarding service aside from the membership fee.

Recently, I was updating my blog and upon completing the entry noticed a very cool announcement from Google and You Tube. These two titans of the internet have joined forces to provide a new service for You Tube and Google AdSense users.

The Good Points:

My website topic is about gyroplanes and I got a funny video of "Chad Vader", a grocery manager complete with light saber. Funny-yes, relevant to the site-no. The fourth stat is the page eCPM. Page eCPM (cost per 1000 page impressions) is considered an estimate on the percentage of earnings you would make if you had 1000 page impressions. The fifth and final stat is earnings. This is your profit and what you have made off of participating in the Google Adsense program. If you've been around the net for any lenth of time, you'll remember that advertising was done in a way that was very similar to other types of media such as television, or actually, more like what you'd see in a newspaper.

You'd enter a site, and in some location, usually at the top of the page, you'd see a banner (often these were quite numerous and very large), which would present an ad for whatever company was paying for ads on that website.

But there was one problem with this kind of advertising. It really wasn't taking into consideration the fact that the ads weren't in some newspaper, but were instead presented over the Internet.

You've probably noticed a lot of things like this over the pages you've browsed. You're looking at an on-line shop, looking for a watch but you get a banner that advertises a car or a weight loss program.

While you might, at some later point want to buy a car, right now you're looking for a watch and it would have surely been nice if the banner were advertising a watch, because then you would have probably clicked it.

Advertising that matches the content (or product) on the page it's being displayed on would be much more useful than random ads that usually have nothing in common with the site's product or content.

Well Google thought that "targeted" advertising would be much more beneficial to it's users (searchers) and its advertisers, so they came up with a killer idea. Their ingenious idea was Google AdSense, and it's known as a targeted advertising program.

What you do (as a web designer / website owner or marketer) is, allocate some section of your page, or pages, to display content specific (targeted) ads. What this means is the ads that are shown on your site relate to the product or content (article, review, etc.) on the page the ad is being displayed on.

Once you sign up for the Google AdSense program, all that is required is that you insert a small snippet of code into your webpage and Google ensures that in the location you specify, text or an image will appear, presenting ads relevant to the subject of your site. You have complete control over the style (text, image, link) of the ad or ads on your site. You even have control over the size of the ad and the colour.

It's very easy for Google to do this because Google is a search engine company, probably THE largest search engine. It looks for keywords on your page, searches a database of websites to find the ones related to whatever is on your site and presto: a targeted ad.

You (the webmaster) earn a commission for each visitor that clicks on an Adsense ad on your site. Now that's bound to happen more often than with a traditional banner because people are actually interested in what's in that ad (otherwise, they wouldn't be on your page would they?).

The relevancy of the ad/s is the key to the program's success, and also the reason why most affiliates are happy with the program. The advertiser has a relevantly placed advert, the publisher earns money from their content and Google takes their cut.

Of course, as always, Google has set some high standards for its AdSense program, in terms of looks and functionality. You can't have more than three ads on a page and they have very strict rules about clicks and links. But as long as you follow the rules, you can make some decent money.

An extra benefit of the Google program is that AdSense advertising is a lot less obtrusive then regular advertising. But this also means you should position the ad better because it's possible that visitors might miss it altogether.

So in the end, Google AdSense is an advertising program that is unique because the ads are relevant to the content on the site. Anyone that wants to advertise pays Google for it. Anyone who wants to place ads on their site does this through AdSense, getting paid by Google in the process.

All transactions are run through Google, and the advertisers and publishers get access to statistics which help them to understand and moderate the effectiveness of their campaign.

You should first of all make sure you're making use of the AdSense channels. Don't just create 1 channel for all your ads but instead 1 for each ad. By this I mean that if you have a standard layout for all your pages of your site and for example have 3 ads, one below the header, one in the sidebar, and one in the footer, you should create 3 channels and name them appropriately (e.g. "header","sidebar" & "footer").

Once you've done that you can start playing around with placement and blending to achieve the best results.

The best way to see which works best is to use A/B testing where you compare 2 variations at the same time. Always remember that ad optimization is an on going trial and error process.

As trichnosis has already mentioned, section targeting would also be a good way to increase your CTR but ONLY if your ads are unrelated to your site content. Be careful when you implement section targeting though as incorrect use can make the relevancy of the ads worse.

I'm not going to give any tips on promotion because each site is different. But if all you've done is made a website and update occasionally (even regularly) and do nothing more than that then watch the stats in your Adsense control panel then the site isn't going to grow in traffic.

Search engine giant Google has expanded its sponsored search tool AdSense onto mobile phones, in an attempt to target client brands with mobile-friendly websites.

Google said that AdSense for Mobile will be aimed at brands keen to monetise their mobile content via contextual advertising.

As with Google’s website AdSense programme, the mobile offering will run on an auction model and will deliver text ads that are relevant to a website’s audience and content.

According to the internet giant, the expansion of AdSense will help users access information on the move, while allowing advertisers to exploit the growing number of mobile-compatible websites.

Google has looked to ramp up its commercial activity in recent months with several high-profile acquisitions, including that of DoubleClick. The search engine company has also expanded its Google Earth offering by allowing users to see images of other planets.

However, recent research by ComScore found that Google has lost its top ranking in the UK in terms of page impressions to teen social networking site Bebo.

Sean Cornwell, senior product marketing manager of Google UK, said: “With AdSense for Mobile, the reach of the Google content network is extended to the mobile platform.

“AdSense for Mobile provides a valuable way to connect mobile users with the right ad at the right time as they seek information on the go, whilst offering publishers another way to increase their revenues.”
